Rolex Submariner Transitional 16800
Rolex Submariner Ref. 16800 Transitional (1985)
The Rolex Submariner 16800 Transitional occupies a unique and important position within the history of the Submariner. Produced during the transition from vintage to modern Rolex sports watches, the 16800 combines the charm and character of earlier Submariner references with several significant technical upgrades, including a sapphire crystal and the high-beat Calibre 3035 movement.
As one of the shortest-production Submariner references, the 16800 has become increasingly sought after by collectors. It offers the best of both worlds: the warm aesthetics and vintage appeal of earlier Submariners alongside the durability and practicality associated with later models.
This 1985 example is an especially attractive and honest watch. The case remains sharp with strong lines and appears to have avoided excessive polishing over the years. The dial is particularly appealing, with the hour markers having developed an attractive and even patina that complements the watch beautifully. The hands and dial present exceptionally well and give the watch the character collectors look for in a vintage Submariner.
The watch is currently fitted with a later Rolex luminova service insert, which remains in excellent condition and provides a clean, crisp appearance. Importantly, the original bezel insert is also included with the sale. Whilst showing some damage, its inclusion will be appreciated by collectors who value originality and provenance.
Fitted to a Rolex reference 93150 Oyster bracelet with 580 end links, the bracelet remains in excellent condition for its age, showing only minimal stretch.
