Description
The watch
Since its birth in 1945, the Datejust has been one of Rolex most popular and distinctive models. The fluted bezel, baton hour markers and jubilee bracelet variation is arguable the most iconic of the range. Known for its reliability, the 1601, in particular, has a true vintage charm and is well suited to any formal or casual setting.
The detail
This watch was made circa 1973 (33XXXXX serial) and houses the stunning and rare ‘step’ dial. You often see vintage timepieces described as ‘great condition for its age’ – this piece is genuinely beautiful for any age. The only point of note is a the hour dots at 11,1,2 and 8 o’clock are missing, but the fact that they are no longer luminous anyway, means that it’s a minor issue (and not very noticeable!). The dial, of course, can be changed with a service at Rolex, but we were keen to keep the watch original. The dial has turned a beautiful silver/cream colour over the years, giving it that all important ‘vintage’ look – unfortunately the pictures don’t do it justice, on the wrist it really is pretty special. Crucially, the bracelet is in excellent and tight condition. The bezel is also nice and sharp.
